How To Avoid Facebook Fan Page, Group Wall Spamming

in Internet,Tools & Extras

If you’re a blogger or you have some online business then you might be aware of the importance of having a facebook fanpage or group for your blog or business. Keeping in mind that today Facebook is having more than 500 million active users, it really makes sense to think of facebook as an important traffic source for a site. So if you still don’t have it then a million dollar advice for you would be Go and get it now!

Once you get a Facebook  fan page and its fan count increases beyond 100 or so, spammers starts having a close eye on it. They get into the fan page or groups and start spamming walls by posting dozens of links on it to their site. This in turn harms the reputation of your brand and you may end up losing lots of your fans for this. So you must avoid or stop Facebook fan page wall spamming.

How to Avoid/Stop Facebook Fan Page Wall Spamming?

Depending on the number of fans you have on your fan page, you may choose any one of the following methods to avoid facebook fan page and group wall spamming.

1] Method#1 [For Facebook Fan pages and Groups] – Blocking User Permanently

For small facebook pages and groups it’s better you permanently block a particular user who’s spamming on your wall. Here’s how to do it. On the fan page click on the “See All” link. (See the screenshot below)

Facebook fan page See all

This will show up name of all the fans. Click on the cross mark (X) in front of the name user to be blocked.

Ban Facebook user

Once you click “X” mark, you will see a pop-up window shown below . Check the box “Ban Permanently” and then hit the “Remove” button. This way a particular user is blocked permanently.

2] Method#2 [For Fan pages only] – Editing Wall Posting Permissions

For fan pages with large following blocking individual users wouldn’t be a solution. So in this case a possible solution is to prevent users from posting a link on the wall by editing wall posting permissions. They will be able to post photos and videos but they wouldn’t be allowed to post a link on the wall.

To prevent users from posting link on the wall click on the “Options” link just below the “Share” button.

facebook wall options

Now you will see “Settings” tab. Click on it and it will show you the Wall posting permissions. Uncheck the box saying “People who likes this page can Post the links”.

Facebook Fan Page Posting Permissions

Doing this will prevent any member of the fan page from posting links on the wall while they are free to post photos and videos on the wall.

If you have any other way for dealing with Facebook fan page wall spamming then please do let us know in comments. We would love to hear from you.

i think its not a spamming. its a information sharing. by face book and twitter we can send our message to people who are only contact with us by internet.

So what do you call it then when a ‘information sharer’ posts a porn link on your dead daughters memorial site?

Hello,

Well said man, great info!

I am wondering if anybody is aware of a way where we can stop fans from commenting on photos of a fan page? I am sure it has a hack or something!

Thanks,

Firas

Our problem is that the spam is being posted via email and it appears as if it is coming from “us” not a fan. I have not seen this on other pages, but every few hours we get crap put up about verizon or iphones.

I have temporarily removed all other admins until they change their facebook passwords and I have changed my facebook password – still happening.

Has anyone else seen this particular virus or hacking and know a solution? Our little fan page was just beginning to grow and would hate to see folks bail on us because of this foolishness.

Well RF, I think you should try editing the wall posting permissions of your fanpage (see method 2 that i have discussed in the above article), by doing so no one will be allowed to post any content on your fanpage.
I hope it works for you.

Hi Rod,

Facebook has changed the way these settings are modified. Actually now what you need to do is to go to your facebook page and look for “Edit Page” button on the top right hand corner. Click on that and you will find there the wall posting permission settings.
Let me know if you face any problem.

Cheers

I am with Rod I cannot locate the share button to find the options setting for wall permissions. Was this before facebook changed? Maybe that is why I cannot find it. I hav so many ppl posting links to their sites and I dont even know who they are. Seems like they are just using my page to advertise their own blog. Can you help find the share button. Thanks in advance.

Hi Tina,

Yes you’re right! The methods mentioned above were for previous facebook design. Please see my comment in reply to Rod’s comment which will tell you how to modify wall posting permissions for current facebook design.

I hope you will find this useful.

Hi Shahab

I tried the edit page button and yes you can do curtain tasks but i still cannot prevent links being post?
Below are the tasks you can perform.
Posting Ability Users can write or post content on the Wall
Users can add photos
Users can add videos
I guess they changed the the design so you cannot prevent others from posting there links.

Any other advise would be grateful

Cheers

Hi Rod,

Yes you’re right. They have changed it a bit. But i would say earlier it was much better as we had better control specifically over posting links by users. For now the only viable option that can prevent posting of spam links is to not allow the users to post or write content on the wall. This control option is very strict and user participation in the community will get reduced for sure after implementing this. But in the end this is the only option we have (as per my knowledge). So we couldn’t do any better.

hhmm we can prevent user to post any link in page’s wall by following method :

Edit page – apps (Below, Left side of the page) – Link (go to applications) – Click on “Only allow admins to post links.”

save and Enjoy !

@Akhil Thanks for your suggestion Akhil. I tried it but the user can still post a link. Have you checked whether its actually working or not?

19 AkhiL Sharma July 14, 2011 at 5:49 pm

Oh Yeah, i have tried and tested.
Its working.

I think you have done some thing wrong there 😐

with this a user can’t post any LINk (like ; any page or website promotion link.)

You only have to visit that LINK app. and just click on 2nd radio button then save and done.

Hi dennis,

Always avoid clicking on suspicious links on facebook because if you click those spam links they will spread like a wild fire among all your friends and inappropriate content will be posted on all your friend’s wall. So key is to keep your login details safe and stay away from the untrusted content. I hope this makes sense to you.
