Twitter team members Ryan Sarver and Raffi Krikorian have confirmed that twitter has started rolling out a new feature called Local Trends Feature. Presently this feature has been made available to very small number of twitter users.
Local Trends feature makes use of the twitter’s standard Trending Topics data along with the twitter’s geolocation functionality to make it based on location.
In a statement to Mashable, Twitter said the following:
We’re rolling out local trends to 1 percent of users today, but we’ll share more information when it reaches a larger audience hopefully sometime next week
Since this feature is available to very small number of twitter users (almost 1% of the total twitter users) therefore there is not much buzz about it on twitter right now. But here are few screenshots of this new feature.

Twitter using location trends will actually make it compete in the same space as FourSquare, and will probably leap it past foursquare pretty soon as custom apps and API’s are developed to take advantage of this.
